The Great MN Pet Food Drive!

Pets in need will get holiday meals too! The Great Minnesota Pet Food Drive is ON!

The Twin Cities Dog Daycare Association (TCDDA) will be conducting the first annual Holiday Pet Food Drive this year from November 1st to December 15th.

To add to the fun, the participating organizations have challenged each other to a friendly competition to see who can collect the most. Currently Dog Day Getaway has a commanding lead with a donation of 385 lbs of Kibble from Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance! The Great Minnesota Pet Food Drive is off to a stronger than expected start! Needless to say this generosity has spurred the other businesses, their customers, and vendors to step up the love!

Similar to Toys for Tots or food shelf drives, participating locations will have bins in the lobby and customers who love their own dogs, will have an opportunity to help dogs in need by contributing food, supplies, or monetary donations.

All donations will be collected for local charities such as The Pet Project, an organization that helps families avoid surrendering beloved pets by providing pet food. Donations will also go to various local shelters and rescue organizations.

The Twin Cities Dog Daycare Association was created in 2010 with a mission of driving standards, integrity and improving care in the dog daycare/boarding industry.

“We created this organization because we have so much compassion for dogs.” Says Anne Hendrickson of Downtown Dogs.  “And we wanted their care experience to meet their emotional and physical needs. And that unfortunately isn’t every facilities priority. We want to model, motivate, and drive “dogs first” care.”

“Our goal is to give customers information on how to choose a facility that meets all of their dog’s emotional, health, and comfort needs” says Keith Miller of The Pampered Pooch.

And TCDDA doesn’t just care about paying customers dogs. “We see a responsibility to the less fortunate dogs” says Wendy Harter of Dog Days in St. Paul.

This drive will certainly be high impact in providing for dogs in need and building public compassion and awareness for “man’s best friend”.

11-19-12 Well folks are sure stepping up to help dogs in need! The donations are POURING in. Nature’s Variety has donated 400 LBS to the drive! What amazing generous folks, and absolute premium food, no less!  and we have gotten some awesome media! Check it all out!

How to choose a dog daycare

We all want the best thing for our dogs, but choosing a kennel or daycare can be hard. But there are some tricks to make it easy.

First and foremost:

Think like your dog!

Remember your dog can hear and smell much better than you and cannot see nearly as well. So you want to focus on the sound and smell to determine what your dogs experience will be. Constant barking is PROVEN to be stressful to dogs. Loud play groups are a red flag.

Of course the place should be neat and clean but over the top reception areas mean the money was spent on eye candy for you rather than staff, play space and other things for your dog. It is a definite comment on the businesses values.

Open Air Design

You (and anyone) should be able to walk in at any moment unannounced and see a play group before your eyes. This means the facility is 100% accountable at all times for the environment your dog is in. If you cannot see, hear, and smell the play group from the reception area, there is a reason.

Individualized care

Different dogs need different amounts of rest and play. Will the facility customize your dogs schedule based on their particular needs so they get plenty of play and stimulation and also enough rest to avoid becoming sore, over tired, and uncomfortable?

By thinking about your dogs sensory needs, social needs, and physical needs you will be able to situate them in an environment that will make them very happy!
